Here in New England, winter 2007 is over and the snow I love to paint is back in storage. I love winter but I am not so fond of "stick season",that time after the snow has melted but before the leaves unfurl.I usually end up in the studio for that time of the year. It might be a good time to be in Italy. That's what I did last year and a show of that work is running in Dallas at the Galerie Kornye.What an artists paradise that is.
While impatiently waiting for the spring color I designed a painting of water lilies that I have been wanting to make for a year or so. I completed the painting to our left in April.. It's enormous,48 x 48! In its 22 carat frame its 58 x 58. Seeing it reproduced so small gives no idea of the impact a painting as big as the hood of a 1970 Buick can have.
As it was just too big to fit into his truck, Ron Brown of the Banks Gallery helped us by renting a U-haul to take it to their Portsmouth location.
Kathleen made the 22k gold frame. It took some thought to figure out how to join the pieces of 5" wide molding and once joined we worried that we might not get it up the stairs and through the door. To prevent damage we crated the framed painting in the basement workshop where the frame was made and took down a sheet rock wall around the stairway in order to get it out.

1. June 23rd and 24th I will be teaching a workshop at the Providence Art Club. I believe it is filled and has a wait list, however if you are interested in a workshop let me know as there may be another on the horizon.

2. The New England Plein Air Painters will have a plein air paint out in Salem, MA in July.This will be part of a gathering of the tribe involving most of the member painters of the organization out painting on the streets of Salem.If you are in the area come and see us work, July 18 through the 21st. There will be a show of the members work at the Kennsington-Stobart Gallery in the Hawthorne Hotel into August with an opening on Friday July 21 and another wet-paint opening with the work created at the plein air paint out on Saturday July 21 in the Hawthorne Hotel. 3. August 23rd and 24th I will be one of the panelists at the Cape Cod Museum of Art National Art Conference titled- Representing Reality: What the Eye Sees - What the Mind Knows. Great title and this will be interesting to anyone involved with visual art.

This painting was made on location in the White mountains last autumn and it is a personal favorite. Sometimes everything just falls into place . I joke that when that happens I can shoot art from my fingertips Gee, you ought to get some breaks after 32 years painting outside! It won a prize at the Rockport Art Association this month! In June it will move to the Byan Memorial Gallery in Jeffersonville, VT for their annual "Land & Light" exhibition.

Here is a bit of snow! I just could not resist showing this. It is warm snow. This is from the American Art Review March/April 2007 issue on page 58.
All of these were painted on location .
I painted the upper one on a painting trip to Cornish New Hampshire, where Willard Metcalf worked a century ago .As you may know Willard is a great hero of mine and I enjoy finding the places he and other artists worked.

A year ago this May I spent the month painting in Italy. To date, as I have them completed, I am sending the paintings of Venice and Positano to Galerie Kornye in Dallas, TX . This evocative painting is one of my blue night scenes of a very lovely view of Positano.
