CHARM IS THE ONE QUALITY THAT WILL REDEEM A PAINTING BEARING ANY OTHER FAULT.

Put the note down and leave it alone. If you don't like it, repaint it, or throw more paint down on to it. You can't worry the paint into a picture once its on the canvas.

If I look at what the artist made, then subtract from that what is actually there, I arrive at the the artists decisions .

although you worked hard to learn to state your values accurately, there are times, particularly in landscape painting when you will want to state them artistically. They are subject to the decision making process and are a tool of design like any other.

Design cannot be observed into a painting.

You can not "observe" fine handling of edges into your painting. You must, observe, think and then decide, how you will handle each edge.

YOU CANNOT OBSERVE EXPRESSIVE EDGES INTO A PAINTING. THEY MUST BE INSTALLED.
IN ORDER TO DO THAT YOU MUST OBSERVE, THINK AND THEN DECIDE.


NOTHING GOOD GETS INTO A PICTURE BY ACCIDENT.

HE MADE THINGS DARK OR BRIGHT IN VALUE, BASED ON WHAT FURTHERED HIS DESIGN, RATHER THAN HOW THEY ACTUALLY APPEARED IN FRONT OF HIM!

THERE IS MORE ART THAN THERE ARE WALLS IN THE GALLERIES TO SHOW THAT ART. LOTS MORE.

  • Is this brushstroke in the right place?
  • Is it in the light or is it in the shadow?
  • Is it the right value?
  • Is it the right color?
  • Is it the the right chroma, that is, is it too saturated or is it too grave ( gray)?
  • Is the temperature of the color correct, is it too warm or is it too cool?

KEY IS, LIKE EVERYTHING ELSE IN A PAINTING, SUBJECT TO THE MACHINERY OF DESIGN.

So, how does one achieve "charm"?

"dicapob" I have no idea, I think it might be an Italian swear word.

That's a tough question. I think maybe an artist is charming when they can appeal to the "heart"of the viewer without being obvious or cloying.Is occasionally done by naive artists, overcoming their lack of technical chops, Grandma Moses for instance.Must be done without a whiff or guile or it becomes charms evil cousin...heightened cheese content.
Somebody in Hollywood once said "sincerity, if you can fake that..... you've got it made!"

dicapob= Italian guitarists term for the practice of using a pair of capo's, giving two shortened fretboards which are both played at once.
