Some key ideas from this blog, reiterated, again

Richard Parkes Bonington 1802-1828 ( images from artrenewal.org.)
Gifted young English watercolorist and freind of Delacroix died tragically young of tuberculosis at age twenty five.

I believe tonight I will reiterate. I have made a habit of highlighting certain phrases that I thought were of greater import in my posts. Tonight I intend to revisit some of them. Here are some of the "key" ideas that I have sought to emphasize over the course of writing this blog.

IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO PUT TOO MUCH EMPHASIS ON WHAT THE PAINTING ACTUALLY LOOKS LIKE! That's why we call it a visual art.

NOW LISTEN TO ME CAREFULLY, THE PURPOSE OF AN ART SCHOOL IS TO PROVIDE EMPLOYMENT FOR ITS INSTRUCTORS.

DO EVERYTHING WITH THE LARGEST BRUSH POSSIBLE.

NO ONE CAN TEACH YOU TO DO ANYTHING IN ART, THAT THEY CAN'T DO THEMSELVES!

THE ABILITY TO JUDGE A DRAWING PROCEEDS THE ABILITY TO MAKE ONE.

THE DARKEST DARK IN THE LIGHTS IS ALWAYS LIGHTER THAN THE LIGHTEST LIGHT IN THE DARKS.
conversely
THE LIGHTEST LIGHT IN THE DARKS IS ALWAYS DARKER THAN THE DARKEST DARK IN THE LIGHTS.

OBSERVATION SHOULD NOT RULE , BUT SUGGEST EXECUTION

ART HAS NO REASON TO EXIST, OTHER THAN THAT IT BE WELL MADE.

WOULD THIS BE A BETTER PAINTING IF I PUT A BURNING PHONE BOOTH IN IT?

A PAINTING SHOULD NOT BE DANCING ABOUT WITH ITS PANTS DOWN AROUND ITS ANKLES!

IT IS NOT WHAT THE ARTISTS FEELS, INTENDS OR EXPLAINS THAT IS IMPORTANT! WHAT IS IMPORTANT, IS WHAT THE ARTIST EXPRESSES.

IN AN IMPRESSIONIST PAINTING THE COLOR IS MADE TO "VIBRATE" BY THE JUXTAPOSITION OF DIFFERING NOTES USUALLY OF THE SAME VALUE.

NATURE HAS NO STYLE. STYLE IS INSTALLED AND NOT DISCOVERED BY THE ARTIST.

STYLE IS HOW IT IS A PICTURE OF, RATHER THAN WHAT IT IS A PICTURE OF.

A PAINTING SHOULD NOT BE MISTAKEN FOR A WINDOW. A VIEW OUT OF A WINDOW IS STYLELESS. VISION IS STYLELESS.

I SELECT AND HANG THE VARIOUS COMPONENTS OF THE LANDSCAPE BEFORE ME ONTO A SCAFFOLD CALLED DESIGN. I INVENT THIS SCAFFOLD MYSELF, RATHER THAN FINDING IT IN NATURE.

Design is imposed on nature, not discovered there.

I have more for tomorrow night. See you then.

I find these kinds of statements very insightful. I am going to have to research your blog to find out how some of the statements are supposed to be applied.
Keep them coming though.

Stapleton,

Great stuff. I always liked Bonnington, died too young to get his proper due, I think.

Sorry to comment so far back, but I am currently reading your backblog.

"THE ABILITY TO JUDGE A DRAWING PROCEEDS THE ABILITY TO MAKE ONE."

Do you mean, The ability to judge a drawing precedes the ability to make one?

Or do you mean, The ability to judge a drawing proceeds from the ability to make one?

Or do you mean, The ability to judge a drawing garners more proceeds than the ability to make one?
