Edgar Payne ( who I Have recommended before) wrote a great little book entitled "Compostion in Outdoor Landscape Painting" If you haven't acquired this book, you should.
He lays out a number of standard designs. The one which is most typical of him is Group mass.
Below is an example of group mass, by Fredrick Mulhaupt, a Gloucester artist.

A group mass composition is where the artist sucks all of the element of the composition into an attractive arrangement gathered about the center of the canvas. Group mass designs seem really 1020-1930 to me.

All that I have been writing about design the last several days is better delineated in Paynes book and I encourage you to read that if you have not. I don't intend to continue with this thread, but aim to send you to study these ideas in his book.
Tomorrow I intend to open up with an entirely new subject. I have been traveling, could you tell? I have a whole new set of ideas to cover. I an fairly buzzing with subjects about which I want to write. See you tomorrow.

That Mulhaupt is wonderful!

Are you familiar with Walter Launt Palmer? Great snow scenes.

I was going to say that Mulhaupt is extraodinary but Bill covered that. I looked on Amazon for a Mulhaupt book but would probably have to see it in person before spending big dollars on it. Unless you can reccomend THE Mulhaupt must-have book of all time.
All the best to you Stape, love what you're doing.

I just got that book last month. I have not started reading yet, but I will- I promise.
I like group massing. It just feels comfortable to me. Guess I am old fashioned.
I will send my book report on the Payne book as soon as I finish it.

Todd;
The only Mulhaupt book I know is the catalog from the Gloucester show. It might be available from the North Shore Art Association.
