Ewing farm

Here is todays demo picture, an 18 by 24. It was actually a two morning effort, but I talked a lot as I did it. These old farm buildings are from the turn of the century. The subject matter here is so like that used by the the Dutch painters. The low horizon line and the old buildings really made for a natural design. I wonder who used these buildings? They are all in ruins now.

I appreciate the 30 comments I got on the seascape. I have never had so many before. Whats with that? I will do a series of seascape posts. I will have to wait a week or two to begin them because I am going to have to make a painting and photograph it step by step to do that.
I have taught all day and can't write more. I will be back tomorrow.

Stape, I'm looking forward to the seascape posts...with the Pacific Ocean half a mile from my door it's one of the last frontiers in my painting adventures. I could use some help!

You? Talk alot? Imagine that!
The seascape is wonderful (I'm a day late on posting) and I like this farm scene too. It will be wonderful to see your process on the seascape.
'nuther question: That big flat wooden paintbox you have - do you or any readers here know of a source to get something like that? Is your palette in that or separate, I can't remember.

Another beauty. I love how that shadow reads across the path. It creates such a genuine effect of light

That seascape painting is awesome - no wonder you're getting so many posts about it! I recently spent a week trying to capture surf and I have a new appreciation about how good you are at this. Please, more, more.

This is a beaut. Thanks for posting it large, I had fun looking at all of the brushwork.

Stape, Did you paint the landscape first in the painting above and then drop the barns into it as you suggested in your post entitled "Placing Buildings into a Landscape"?
That was an enormously helpful tip for me. Thank you so much.

Stape, this is a wonderful painting. I can learn so much simply by studying your use of color and your brushwork. I would love to see the original. Thanks!

Did I mention by the way.. Your signature is cool.
I'll bet there is a story about that!

Stapleton, my brain, hands, and body are all on overload after this VERY Intensive 5 day workshop.
I can only hope to go home and process all the information. It was worth the 9 hour drive to this sleepy little town of Rolling Fork Ms. I can and will encourage everyone to take one of your workshops. It will be an experience that will change the way you THINK about your approach to composition, values, trees, landscapes, seascapes, and everything else you thought you knew about painting. You not only talk the talk...You know how to walk the walk!!

Don and I have enjoyed meeting you and all the the other artists this week. We are happy "Moonbats" alive and well in Oklahoma.

Seascapes are the overwhelming best seller so I am not surprised that everyone loved the painting and wants to see more.

Is there an ocean out there too?

Deb;
You can just buy a commercial paintbox and open it up flat. Remove the brass thingies that are supposed to keep it from opening up too far. The palette fits inside.

Are they really? I didn't know that. I wonder if that is true all over the market or in only certain price levels.

To answer your question about these buildings: As Mississippi has gone from family farms in the 40's and 50's to an economy of industry, most of these delta building that you see are falling into ruins- they will all be gone in a few years! Big managed "corporate" farms have swallowed up small farm land in the delta and that is the way it goes...The wealthy families will probably restore some- but most will fade away...same thing happening here in the hills to our barns...That's one reason I paint landscapes to include them whenever possible...I'm nostalgic.
