Cranford Surf

Here is what I was working on for the quick draw event as Garin painted my portrait. I painted this under the overhanging eves at the entrance to the commuter rail station in downtown Cranford. We were allowed 2 and 1/2 hours for the project.

I don't quickdraw, I slowdraw. I have worked at that. I am rather meticulous, except on a seascape, I can get a rough seascape on a canvas in a couple of hours and so when I do demonstrations I like to do a seascape. I use no references and it is made up on the spot. The painting is not a place I remember. It is not a place that really exists.

I don't go to paintouts, I think this was my first. Maybe I have been to one or two before but it was long ago. But it was fun and I would do it again. I enjoy meeting the other artists.

I have so many deadlines to make around here. All the dealers want their art and I am way behind, I apologize for posting so late in the day but I am harried with travel and commitments.

Like your Cranford piece. Paint outs are great fun. I usually do one each spring in Solomons MD. More of a celebration than a competition. Since we are the same age let me pass this along, killer internet radio station www.okemosbrewing.com . Wish I could listen on location, backdrop music of my life.

Question: Have you tried painting on birch plywood that has been sealed with sellac? Has a nice golden tone.

This is beautiful, and it does not, in fact, have a beak! I see those everywhere since you posted about it.

Stape! This has all the wonderment of a story told.
Being from the midwest,I've always been facinated with surf.
The colors and mood sugguests a wind swept moment at twilight.Something I'm sure you've known for a long time.

I don't know how you do it. Did you come with little composition sketches or did you ad lib the whole thing? It's very beautiful, and I'm very impressed with how you made the sun seem so bright.

This makes me feel like I'm back in Rolling Fork Ms. Great piece of work Stape. Thanks for posting it.

Okay, Stapelton, you just totally cracked me up with this post.

Let's see, you participated in a plein air quickdraw and decided to fabricate a seascape while standing on a downtown rail station? Ha! That must have raised a few eyebrows...

If I ever do get to meet you in person I want to buy you a drink. If only to slap you on your back and not upside the head. Genius. Pure frickin' genius...

For another (anti-) quickdraw story, check this out. But scroll down far enough to get to Kitsy, eh?

Really. Now I do want to meet you. Because clearly you must be a fun guy to paint with!

Thomas

That sounds just like you, Stape.. make up a fabulous painting on the spot.
Thomas, loved your Telluride story. I'm headed up that way in a couple of weeks. Will you be there again this summer?
Stape, I saw info on the Telluride paintout in Plein Air mag and thought of you immediately. I hope you will
try to attend that one next year, as we are in that area every July and I would love to come and see your work there. Telluride is a great town. Look up at the mountains above the park if you go, and that's where our big hundred mile footrace runs through. One of our aid stations is actually in the park where the artists display works.
